fifteen two, fifteen four, and a pair is six

hand over

game over

cribbage

Two players, first to 121 on the board. Aces are 1, pictures are 10, the rest their number.

The deal. Six cards each. Each player puts two into the crib, an extra hand that belongs to the dealer. The other player cuts the deck for the starter card. A jack starter is two for the dealer, his heels.

The play. The non-dealer leads and you take turns laying cards, adding up a running count that may not pass 31. Making 15 pegs 2, making 31 pegs 2, a pair 2, three of a kind 6, four of a kind 12, and a run of three or more (in any order, from the last cards played) its length. If you cannot play under 31 you say go; the other player plays on while they can and pegs 1 for the go. Then the count starts over. The last card of the play pegs 1.

The show. Each hand is counted with the starter, the non-dealer first, then the dealer, then the crib: every combination adding to 15 is 2, each pair 2, runs their length, four of a suit 4 (five with the starter; the crib needs all five), and 1 for his nobs, the jack of the starter's suit. Points peg the moment they are counted, so the game can end mid-hand.

A hand worth nothing is called a nineteen, since nineteen is the one score a hand can never make. Losing under 91 is a skunk, under 61 a double skunk.

Sounds covers the card and peg noises, and the slider next to it covers everything. Music plays soft ambient music. Night mode warms the screen for a dark room. Chill mode turns all three on for late nights. Every switch is remembered on this device.
